psychosis / unusual experiences
Psychosis, Paranoia, Voices, Delusional Beliefs & Unusual Experiences
how can cbt help with psychosis / unusual experiences?
Everyone experiences irrational or suspicious thoughts at times, but when these thoughts become exaggerated and persist despite a lack of evidence, they can develop into paranoid thinking. Paranoia involves a distorted perception of reality, where individuals believe others have harmful intentions, even in the absence of any proof. For example, someone may start to feel that they are being bullied, that rumours are being spread about them, or that others are talking behind their back. In more extreme cases, paranoid thoughts might include beliefs that someone is trying to harm them physically or even take their life. Individuals may also feel as though they are being tricked into giving away money, having their property damaged, or being stolen from, even when there is no logical reason to think so.
CBT can also support work on voice hearing experiences by working towards reducing distress, frequency, intensity and beliefs about the voices. CBT encourages connections, understanding and beliefs to be explored, using your previous experiences to explore helpful coping skills for you to develop a more comfortable and achievable day to day living experiences.
We explore the patterns of suspicious and paranoid thinking, working to balance perspectives and develop trust-building strategies for improved distress management and mental clarity. CBT encourages individuals to evaluate the reality of their fears and consider alternative, less threatening interpretations. By challenging these distorted thoughts, individuals can reduce the intensity of their paranoia and learn to think more clearly and rationally. The goal of CBT is to improve overall functioning and quality of life by helping people regain control over their thoughts and feelings. Through this process, CBT provides a way to develop healthier thinking patterns, reduce distress, and enhance emotional well-being.
